Enrichment Activities by Rotation

Sixth Rotation:  May 13 (Day 6)-May 21 (Day 5), 2020

Kindergarten and First Grade:

Good morning PAE Musicians!  Let’s start out by singing “Bling, Blang” with the motions.  That’s a good way to get moving.

Bling, blang, hammer with my hammer.

Jingo, jango, cutting with my saw.

Here are the different motions we make while singing the song:

1   One hand hammers, then the same hand saws.

  1. Switch hands and hammer with your other hand, then saw with that hand.
  2. Hammer  with both hands, saw with both hands

4   Cross both hands while hammering, then cross both hands while sawing

5   One hand hammers as the other hand saws at the same time

6   Switch hands, one hand hammers as the other one saws, at the same time.

7  Sitting down, hammer with both feet; then saw with both feet. 

Now that we’re warmed up let’s move on to the main part of the lesson.  Our Learning Target for today is:  “I can tell the difference between the beat and the rhythm in music.”

Remember how we walk into the music room while music is playing?  I always ask you to step the beat--it’s the steady pulse that you feel as the music is playing.  I’d like you to watch some videos that explain the difference between the beat and the rhythm.  After you watch them please turn and talk to someone at me and explain the difference between “beat” and “rhythm”.   These are animated videos with Mike the microphone and Luigi’s baton, Cadence the drummer and Fret the guitar explaining musical elements with song.  Here are the links:

Second Grade and Third Grade:

Hello PAE Musicians! 

Our Learning Target for today is:  I can learn about the four instrument families and the instruments in each family.  

To do this we’re going on a field trip to an orchestra, the Sydney Youth Orchestra in Sydney, Australia!  While you’re watching and listening to George and the orchestra members I’d like you to think about the following items:

--Does this remind you of another boy who learned about instruments and the orchestra, perhaps from the book we listened to in our last music class?  Do you remember who that was?

--Do the boys have anything in common?  If so, what?

--Which instrument or instruments did you like.  Why?

Fourth Grade:  

Hello PAE Musicians! 

Here’s our Learning Target for today:  I can review basic music theory--note names and values (how many beats they’re worth), the staff and the letter names of the lines and spaces, and the treble clef.  

We’ve learned this with our recorder playing, but it’s always a good idea to review.  There might be something new in here.  After watching the videos get ready to do some writing. Please let me know if you learned something new or not.  If you did, what was it?  Was this review helpful in your recorder playing?  Whether you want to sing in a chorus, play guitar, piano, or a band instrument,  reading notes and rhythms from the staff is a skill that is helpful with these activities. Kindergarten and First Grade:

Good morning PAE Musicians!   Let’s start our music time with one of our favorite song stories, “The Other Day I Met A Bear”.  Do you remember this song story from music class?  As we go through the book we echo what is sung.  Do you remember who the main characters are in the story?  (A Fox and a Bear)  What is the setting-where does the story take place?  (the woods/the forest)  Are the bear and fox playing or is the fox afraid of the bear?   What do you think and why? Please tell someone at home.

Today I’d like you to listen to a story about a very musical little boy who played many different types of instruments from different instrument families:  strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion.  After listening to the story (it’s narrated by the author!) I’d like you to write two or three sentences about how the main character solved his problem of what instrument to play.

Fourth Grade:

Good morning PAE Musicians. Today for music you’re going to have a listening and a writing lesson combined!  I’d like you to listen to 2 versions of the same piece of music, Pachelbel’s Canon in D.  This is a piece of music composed almost 400 years ago (in the 1600’s!) but it is still famous and performed today--especially at weddings, which is the setting for both versions. After listening to both I’d like you to write a paragraph comparing and contrasting the two versions. Make a two column note to help with your writing.  Please include which version you prefer, and why. Remember the form a paragraph takes, opening sentence, body with three or four sentences and a concluding sentence.  Please post a picture of your paragraph on Class Dojo messages so I can see them so I know you’ve done the work.  Thank you!

Kindergarten and First Grade:

Some of the songs are new such as “Che Che Koolay”, a call and response song with motions.  There’s a song similar to “Chee Chee Cha” that I think you’ll like. Then when they play instruments you can pretend you’re playing the crow sounder (scraping), drum(tapping) or triangle (one hand has the striker, the other is the triangle).

Second Grade:

 

Hello PAE Musicians!  It’s Day 1 and it’s time for music class. Let’s warm up by reviewing “The Penguin Polka” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3tkjD43n84.  If you can’t remember some of the words you’ll hear them being sung here!

 

After the warm-up let’s move on to reading rhythm patterns again starting with “Introduction to Rhythm Reading Stage Two” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHad-I5AJT0.   This one uses quarter notes (ta), eighth notes (ti-ti) and half notes (ta--a).  They use (toe-e) to say the half note. Either way is correct!  

 

Bonus:  Can you draw your own 4 beat rhythm pattern?  You can copy one from the video or make up your own.

Third and Fourth Grade:

 

Hello PAE Musicians!  Today we’re going to have a Body Percussion Challenge.  The link below will bring you to a new song, “Bim Bum”. The animation shows two birds doing body percussion (clapping, snapping, patting) while singing the song.  The song is repeated a number of times as the tempo (speed) increases. You need to learn the song first before you add the body percussion. Here’s what I’d like you to do:

  1.  Play the video and just listen and watch
  2. Play the video and sing along only
  3.  Play the video, sing and add body percussion

Bim = clapping

Bum = snapping (or just hold your hands out if you can’t snap)

Biddy = patting

 Just add the clap on Bim to start as the song is sung.  Then see if you can add Clap, Snap on Bim, Bum. Then see if you can Clap, Snap, Pat, Pat, Snap on Bim, Bum, Biddy Biddy Bum.  Make sure you feel comfortable with the body percussion at the slower speed before you start going faster. This might be a song you’d like to practice over a few days. Have fun!

There’s animation along with it, and then they show three different ways to play an ostinato along with the song!  Remember, an ostinato is a rhythmic pattern that repeats over and over for the entire song.

The ostinatos are played on a drum, rhythm sticks and tambourine. Sing the song through just playing one ostinato at a time.  Maybe others in your family could join you. If you don’t have these instruments in your house perhaps you could improvise something to use.  Wooden spoons in the kitchen? Ask permission from a grown-up to use them as rhythm sticks. No drum? Try using the bottom of a pan or bucket.  No tambourine? Try finding something that shakes or rattles (dried beans in a plastic container) or you could pat, clap or snap. Here are some words to help when playing the ostinato:

Drum:  Pie (rest) pump-kin pie (rest) pump-kin pie (and keep repeating as you play)

Rhythm sticks played on the macrobeat:  Fare---thee-- well-------(and keep repeating)

Tambourine:  (rest) mill stream, (rest) mill stream (and keep repeating)

Once you feel comfortable playing the ostinato try playing while singing the song.

Kindergarten:

Today for music you can sing a song from music class to a grown-up or other member of your family.  It could be a song such as “A Million Little Snowflakes” or perhaps one of our warm-ups like “Wake Up You Lazy Bones”.  If you don’t remember the words of the songs I mentioned, think of a fingerplay you know and sing that one with the finger movements!

Today for music you can sing a song from music class to a grown-up or other member of your family.  It could be a song we’ve been working on such as “I’m Growing Up” (do you remember the motions we use?) or perhaps one of our warm-ups like “Wake Up You Lazy Bones”.

Fourth Grade:

Today I’m going to ask you to practice your recorder if it’s clean and you have it with you. You could practice along with the recorder videos we sometimes watch, or use the music in your yellow recorder folder.  You can access the videos online by searching for “RPES Recorder” on youtube. Please get permission from a grown-up before you go online! You can start with “Hot Cross Buns” and play as many songs as you can. Remember to use a gentle breath to make a quiet sound.  Squeaks are caused by blowing too hard or not covering the holes well enough. You could also review how to read notes--the information is in the beginning pages of your yellow recorder folder. After you practice make sure to wash the full recorder, let it dry, and put it away in a clean place.  Feel free to message me through class dojo if you have any questions.
