Webster is a small urban-like community with approximately 16,000 residents located in central Massachusetts ( 18 miles south of Worcester )  on the Connecticut border. Founded by Samuel Slater (The Father of American Manufacturers) in 1812, and incorporated in 1832, Webster was primarily an industrial center due to its abundant water supply.  Textiles and shoe factories flourished in Webster resulting in a population with diverse ethnic backgrounds. Like many former industrial centers, Webster finds its factories of a century ago have closed and are now converted to small businesses and other commercial uses.  Commerce Insurance, the largest provider of home and automobile insurance in Massachusetts has its headquarters in Webster and is the town's largest employer.

By far, the town's richest asset is the beautiful fresh water, spring fed Lake Chargoggagoggmanchaugagoggchaubunagungamaugg.  Water activities abound on the lake and also on its shores is the well-known "Indian Ranch," the New England home of Country Music which draws visitors to Webster from all over the northeast.
